Why It's Important for Some Women to Get Regular Chiropractic CareFor generations, women have been dealing with menstrual cramps. Even though there are numerous ways to mask the pain each month, they come right back the next. Women should know two things: 1. Cramps are not normal. A woman's body was not created with a pain function built in during her menstrual cycle. The pain is only an alerting sign that something is wrong and out of balance. 2. When your nervous system is balanced, your body automatically heals itself and the cramps disappear. In our experience at Soft Touch Chiropractic in Porter Ranch, women who come to us for other various reasons such as back pain, car accident injuries, whiplash, headaches or any other reason, begin to show improvements in other areas of their health because their entire nervous system is experiencing balance through chiropractic adjustments. In the chiropractic world, imbalances in the nervous system are called subluxations. Chiropractors remove subluxations with manual chiropractic adjustments. Adjustments bring balance to the nervous system by removing any interference from the neck and spine. Watch the video below for an example of a chiropractic adjustment. Please understand, I am not claiming that chiropractic is what heals the body of the cramps. Chiropractic is simply a way to give the body what it needs so that it can heal itself. When we give our bodies all it needs to function at optional levels it can and will heal itself. A patient's healing progress greatly depends on how much off balance she is before visiting a chiropractor. Imbalances can be physical, chemical or emotional. For patients that suffer severe menstrual cramping imbalance in all three areas is not uncommon. I highly recommend that a woman see her chiropractor for a comprehensive plan to restore balance. Did you notice you get sick more often after whiplash caused by a car accident? If you have been a patient of Soft Touch Chiropractic in Porter Ranch, CA for any number of years, you have heard me talk about how the integrity of the spine directly affects a person's overall health. An article published in June of 2009 in Nature Review of Immunology, a non-chiropractic science journal, confirms the fact that all immunological functions of the body are controlled and coordinated by the lower half of the brain stem, or more specifically, part of the medulla oblongata through the center of Nucleus Tractus Solitarius (NTS) which is a bundle of nerve fibers that get its input and information from three specific parts of the neck: vertebrae nerves in Cervical 1 (C1), Cervical 2 (C2), Cervical 3 (C3). In layman's terms, all this means that if your neck (C1, C2, C3) is misaligned your immune system becomes a battalion of soldiers being sent out to battle without specific instructions and poor communication to the General (the General being the brain). In turn, the General gets misinformation from the battle field. When the immune system is compromised in this way, it is not working to its full potential. People who have suffered whiplash either because of a car accident or being in a car that came to an abrupt stop, especially need to see a chiropractor and have their necks checked out. In order to restore communication between the brain and the immune system, it is important that your chiropractor checks to be sure your neck is properly balanced and if it is not, apply a proper chiropractic adjustment. Charles Duhigg has written a powerful book that is revealing, practical and useful for creating change in every day life. The Power of Habit begins with the study of a person who suffers amnesia but because of the power of his habits he is able to live a semi-normal life. Even though he could not count on remembering anything, his habits were deeply embedded in his subconscious to the point that his family was able to rely on those habits for this man to take care of himself. The book also reveals how retailers study consumers' habits to target their marketing campaigns accordingly. In addition, they can not only market the right products to the right consumers, they can predict future spending patterns and life events based on previous spending patterns. Habits are a powerful thing and the book shows how we can reign them in and change them to create the desired results in our lives. It ends with the assertion that habits are a choices. We can change our behavior through the creation of new habits when we choose to. Duhigg lists the following three major triggers of habits: 1. A cue that triggers the habit. For example, the end of a meal is a cue for smoking a cigarette. 2. A reward 3. A craving This book gets 4.5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend it. It is a recipe for success through the creation of habits. Click the Like button below. Improve Your Posture 20 Seconds At a TimeAfter practicing chiropractic for 12 years in Porter Ranch, California, I have noticed that with the increase of technology, our postures are getting worse every year. Beginning with the proliferation of PCs until the present day rapid growth of smart phone users, the repetitive movements and ergonomically incorrect ways of using electronic devices are taking a toll on our postures. The constant slouching at a desk and bending of the neck contribute to a humpback spine. The constant bending of the neck while using a smart phone causes misalignments at the base of our necks. The nerve that controls our lungs and heart lives precisely where we bend our neck. As a result of the constant pressure, a person is more prone to cardiopulmonary disease. The following video shows a simple exercise that can be done anytime, any place. Not only will this exercise prevent you from developing a humpback spine, it will also relieve pressure from the nerves that go directly to your heart and lungs keeping you healthier. This exercise, however, does not replace chiropractic treatment to remove subluxations of the neck and spine. Click the Like button below. Keep Calm and See Your ChiropractorDuring our twelve years of business at Soft Touch Chiropractic in Porter Ranch, California, we have learned that the best time to get chiropractic treatment for low back pain is when your body is relaxed and you have no pain; especially if you have bulged discs, herniated discs or if you have disc degeneration. When you have pain, you are under stress and spasms occur in the muscles. Your muscles may also be inflamed. All of that makes it difficult for a chiropractor to treat your condition. When you receive chiropractic care to solve your disc problem, there are two phases: 1. Pain management and 2. Correction of the problem. The corrective phase (phase 2) of chiropractic treatment is what helps to make progress in correcting a low back condition, so it is important that treatment be consistent and that you visit your chiropractor when you are not in pain. Unfortunately, we have had patients that never correct their problem because they stop their chiropractic treatment after their pain disappears (phase 1), but pain management is not enough to correct discs, treatment must continue until the problem is solved.
