.In my office, after my patients are ready to be discharged, most often they ask me, "What is one thing I can do so I don't have this back pain again?" The short answer is, doing spinal flexibility and stretching exercises that help to build strong muscles and support your back. Stretching exercises increase flexibility and movement of the joints and spine. These exercises are designed to be done 5 minutes daily at least 3 times per weeks (See Fig. 1 below). On the other hand, when you’re feeling better, you’ll have a judgment call to make. Will you continue with the chiropractic care necessary to fully heal soft tissues beyond pain level, or will you abandon the investment that you’ve made so far? This is an important question to answer especially if your medical doctor recommended surgery or other invasive procedures. If you opt for surgery, your co-pay alone may be far more expensive than a comprehensive chiropractic treatment plan. When you extend your chiropractic care into a Wellness Care protocol, appointments gradually become less frequent. When you end your chiropractic care before fully healing the immobilization of the muscles and soft tissue, you can invite a regression. Whatever your choice, you will reap the fruit of it. Galatians 6:7 states "...for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap." Read the following study: The Connective Tissue and Immobilization. Key Factors in Musculoskeletal Degeneration. T Videman. Clin Orthop Relat Res (221), 26-32. 8 1987. AbstractPeriarticular connective tissue is one important part of the musculoskeletal system. Its unique ability to adapt to the shortest distance between its origin and insertion, however, produces harmful effects during immobilization. All situations that lead to immobilization can cause some degree of degenerative change in the musculoskeletal system. When immobilization, whatever its cause, cannot be avoided, every attempt should be made to minimize it and to try to treat its harmful effects. There is some evidence that early mobilization, traction, and continuous passive motion overcome the harmful effects of immobilization, but more knowledge on this subject is needed.
