Most of my male patients with low back pain, who are over the age of 35, usually come to my office with stiff hamstring and calf muscles. After a while, I saw a pattern in this group, then realized I needed to write something about the connection of hamstring stiffness and low back pain . The hamstring class of muscles, based at the back of the upper leg, are literally a group of three separate muscles. The top of these muscles are connected to the lower part of the pelvis, and the lowest of the hamstring muscles are connected to the lower leg bone just under the knee joint. Stiff hamstrings tug on the pelvis. The top of the long hamstring is attached to the pelvis, so this causes a rounding of the lower back (seen in the video below). Over time, this postural imbalance will lead to back and knee pain.
