You just bought a new mattress because the old one seemed to give you a backache and yet, your pain has not gone away. If your new mattress is not fixing the problem, maybe the cause of the problem was never the mattress. After 15 years of treating patients, it is my experience that, most of the time, a mattress is not the reason a person wakes up with back pain. The real culprit is the emotional state a person is in right before going to bed. Things like: having a fight with your spouse and not getting resolved, watching the news, mentally replaying a bad situation which happened during the day or not forgiving, cause the muscles of the body to contract. This means that the body is sleeping in a state of stress and the muscles are contracted for 6-8 hours. This is what causes back pain. The same happens in the case of car accidents. A person involved in an accident might have mild or no pain at all, but the emotional shock causes muscle contraction, not allowing the person to truly rest. In my office located in Porter Ranch, CA, 25-30% of back pain is caused by this phenomenon which we call emotional subluxations. Make it a practice to do an emotional check up before going to bed. Release all emotion by praying, meditating, journaling, resolving conflicts with your loved ones or talking to a friend. Create a calming environment and bedtime routine for yourself by skipping the news channels, reading or watching something inspirational and drinking chamomile tea. If your back pain is consistent, call your local chiropractor and make an appointment today.
