![]() Anytime we expose our joints to repetitive motion and excessive pressure, we may create injury to the inside or outside of our joints. Because of our bio-mechanics, we think running on the treadmill is the same as running outdoors. Studies suggest that treadmill users also run with less of a forward lean and favor a “jumping up and down” movement which is harmful to your joints when done repetitively over time. However, this uses up energy to the detriment of forward momentum. One way to avoid injury is to put your machine on a two percent incline, which will help you counteract the problem of forward leaning and jumping. Also, it may produce a motion that is similar to outdoor running. Bottom line: 1.The best way to run is grassy park, sandy beach, or on dirt. 2. If one the above are not options, use treadmill in up hill position with good shock absorbing shoes. 3. You might give the elliptical bike a try. You may like it! Become more flexible with chiropractic brush!![]() Study after study show the benefit of local vibration on the joints for flexibility and reduction of low back pain. However, general body vibration or vibration platforms are still inconclusive. While the vibration platforms are very expensive, local therapeutic massage tools can be very affordable and more beneficial. The benefits of vibration varies from improved range of motion to better flexibility. Here at Soft Touch Chiropractic, in Porter Ranch, CA we believe it also has preventative advantages. Like brushing you teeth, "brushing" your joints only takes two minutes. Dr. Masoud Shamaeizadeh, DC recommends that you treat your joints the way you treat your teeth and gums. It only takes a few minutes to brush and floss; while you are at it you can take a few minutes to massage your body joints as well. When you vibrate your joints, in a way, you are detoxing them. Joints constantly communicate with the brain and they are important for our balance and well-being. There is evidence that movement of the joints is a good way to prevent degenerative joint disease (DJD). Watch the video below to learn more about preventing DJD.
Published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, the cutaneous sensation was slightly reduced after the high amplitude (8mm) WBV session, which could be beneficial for older individuals with compromised postural control. The WBV exercise consisted of 2 sessions of 4 bouts of 10 seconds of vibration, with 10-second breaks. Parameters used in this study were 2 mm amplitude and 30Hz frequency, the improvement in flexibility being maintained for at least 60 minutes post-intervention. The group that received vibration training plus stretching showed a significant increase in flexibility compared to the non-vibration group. The Journal of Rehabilitation Research The journal of Rehabilitation Research and Practice investigated the effects of whole body vibration on flexibility in patients with metabolic syndrome, showing that this form of exercise can be beneficial for improving the flexibility and range of motion in joints. Study from Western University Whole-body vibration platforms are used to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders like osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and back pain while athletes employ vibration training machines to increase muscle strength. Surprisingly, before this study, there was very little known about the effect of whole-body vibration on joint tissues. A new study from Western University shows that whole-body vibration platforms, which are used extensively in health clubs and rehabilitation clinics, may be causing significant damage to joint tissues. Here at Soft Touch Chiropractic in Porter Ranch, patients normally come to heal their back pain, but often they come in with "side complaints". One of the most common side complaints I hear is about jock itch. I can relate to my "side complainers" because I suffered from jock itch myself. For years I have tried various natural remedies. I used a combination of essential oils applied directly to the skin. Oregano and tea tree oil were the most effective, but they only gave me relief for one or two days. I also used over-the-counter medications: Lamisil, Lotrimin and others. I thought my last resort would be a prescription medication, but none of them worked at all; even taking two showers a day brought little relief. What is jock itch?It is a fungal infection (tinea cruris AKA ringworm, but it is not a worm) that effects the outer layers of skin. Fungi grow in warm, moist and watery areas of skin such as the inner thighs, groin, between toes and buttocks. The Treatment That Actually Worked? While searching for natural creams for muscle spasm, I came across two natural products: Fungus - Luyties and Thuja Ceate. The first is a pill to be taken orally every four hours and the second is a balm to be put directly on the affected skin. They need to be used together. After testing so many products, I said to myself, "What the heck, let's try it." AND it worked. After using the combination of products for two months, I very rarely have itching now. I still use it consistently. The real test came when I went camping and couldn't shower for three days. Usually, I would be suffering by the second day without a shower, but during this trip I had no itching at all. If you have any other questions about the product or how to use it, please call me 818-831-0100. ![]() Here in my office Soft Touch Chiropractic (Porter Ranch California) I have been asked one very important question. Why is it that my hip goes to one side and I feel out of balance? An imbalance of the hips can cause low back pain, which is why I hear this complaint often. There could be more than one right answer. However, there are two major issues: one is structural and the other is functional. Structural has to do with bone formation and shape which could be a result of genetics or lifestyle such as ergonomics or participation in sports. Some people are born with deformed bones and others might have suffered injuries or accidents which deformed the bone. Here I am going to emphasize on functional. Functional refers to the muscle balance of your body. For example, a hip being out of balance or your body leaning to one side, could be due to weak muscles on one side of your body. Weak gluteus medius and minimus muscles can result in leaning to one side. Chiropractors have a specific test, which is shown in the video below, to find out if you have a functional imbalance. Low back pain is only one indication that the muscles on each side of the body are out of balance. The other indicator is the feeling of one hip being higher than the other. If you have either of those two indicators, consult your chiropractor and have them test you for muscle balance.
