You are what you thinkYou may have already heard that you are what you eat and do you know that you are also what you think? A significant part of overall health is determined by the effects of very real chemical reactions in our bodies caused by our thoughts. Two simple examples are the hormones cortisol and serotonin. When we are stressed, our bodies release the hormone cortisol, aka the stress hormone, that's really no mystery; what is less evident is the damage to body organs and tissues over time due to sustained, elevated levels of cortisol caused by stress. Our thoughts alone can and do control our levels of cortisol thus also controlling our overall health. When we allow our thoughts to become negative, toxic, worrisome or less than kind, our body suffers the consequences. One way to deal with the thoughts that cause the release of cortisol is meditation and prayer. Many studies have shown the calming and healing effects of these practices. When was the last time you had a good laugh? Laughter and happy thoughts produce the hormone serotonin in the body. Healthy levels of serotonin aid primarily in digestion and appetite but also in brain, sleep and sexual functions as well as mood and social behavior. There is a proverb that goes like this, "as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." This is proven true by the evidence in our bodies every day.
