Recently, my family and I were in a car accident. We were in a small sedan and were rear-ended by a minivan. Although on the surface, our whiplash injuries appeared minor, we experienced the severity of car accident trauma. Now, I clearly understand and empathize with my car-accident patients, who come for treatment at our office in Porter Ranch, CA. My wife, myself and my two-year old son, who were all in the car, began chiropractic treatments the day after the accident. As a chiropractor, I know what do in these cases and yet it’s ironic that my degree in chiropractic does not exempt me from injuries. Two weeks after consistent adjustments, I realized that I was still foggy-headed and I was suffering from major confusion. I was very impatient and I had to put a hold on all the continued education seminars I teach to other chiropractors. I remembered all the advice I normally give my patients and I put it into practice. After major trauma, such as a car accident, the body is flooded with endorphin and enkephalin hormones, which act as natural pain killers. Our bodies are intelligently designed to respond to trauma by releasing hormones to deal with damage. Cortisol, the stress hormone, is also released by the body after trauma. Excessive cortisol breaks down brain cells. These hormones can linger in the body and cause foggy-headedness and confusion.
