Two types of Detox You Should Know About
My wife has been a fan of detoxifying or cleansing for over 18 years. A friend of hers first introduced her to a cleanse that required taking herbal supplements to cleanse the colon. Her results were so dramatic that she started researching other ways to cleanse. She tried a cleansing regimen that required drinking freshly squeezed juices for three consecutive days and later tried a detox designed specifically to cleanse the gall bladder. With every experience she noticed her energy and vitality increase. Through the years she abandoned her detox rituals until she was introduced to the 21-day detox, which uses only food as a way to cleanse and fortify the body. Now our entire family does a detox together once or twice a year.
Here are some methods of detoxing or cleansing which we have tried in the past:
If your bowel movements are highly irregular or if you are not having bowel movements daily, a colon cleanse supplement is a good place to start. The majority of supplements that are intended for cleansing are specifically for the colon. These supplements, normally in the form of pills, contain cascara sagrada which contains compounds with laxative effects. These types of supplements are not intended for long term use as it can result in dependence on the supplement. It is important that you follow the directions for its proper use as cascara sagrada is a powerful supplement.
The benefits of this type of cleanse are almost immediate. As we have mentioned before, the overall health of a person begins with the health and cleanliness of their colon. This type of detox removes obstructive fecal matter and mucus from the colon allowing the intestines to do their job more efficiently.
The 21-day detox, which our family does once or twice a year, is based on the principle that the body will heal itself, when we give it a break from processed foods and animal products. The detox consists of three stages, one for each week of the 21 days: the first is a vegan menu, the second is raw, vegan and the third is raw, vegan and liquid. This method is a good way to acclimate the body to a cleaner way of eating eventually culminating in a fast. During the 21 days, a person may experience slight flu-like symptoms and headaches if they consume large amounts of caffeine daily, but those symptoms tend to disappear in a day or two; that is how we know that the body is releasing toxicity.
The benefits of this detox go way beyond just cleansing the colon. A person may experience bursts of energy, mental clarity, better sleep, better breathing, reduction in joint pain, disappearance of acid reflux and an overall feeling of wellness.
